Ampersand

A Rwandan company providing electric motorcycles and charging infrastructure, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and operational costs for motorcycle taxi drivers.

Introduction

Founded in 2016, Ampersand is a pioneering electric mobility company based in Rwanda, focusing on electrifying the motorcycle taxi industry in East Africa. The company designs and assembles electric motorcycles (e-motos) and provides a network of battery swap stations, allowing riders to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones in under two minutes. This model significantly reduces operational costs for riders and contributes to environmental sustainability by lowering carbon emissions. As of June 2023, Ampersand had over 1,000 e-motos on the roads in Rwanda and Kenya, with plans to expand further. In 2024, Ampersand partnered with Chinese EV manufacturer BYD to produce 40,000 electric motorcycles by 2026, aiming to capture a significant share of Africa's motorcycle market.
